Tulum, Mexico — Authorities in Tulum have launched an investigation and suspended a municipal traffic officer after video footage circulated showing him apparently accepting money from a driver, an incident residents interpreted as potential extortion.

The Tulum Public Security and Citizen Protection Department initiated an immediate administrative investigation and ordered the officer’s removal from duty to clarify what happened and determine responsibility.

The department said it activated corresponding administrative procedures according to current regulations once it learned of the incident, with the goal of determining applicable responsibilities.

As a preventive measure, the involved officer was immediately separated from his position while internal investigations continue.

In a statement, the department reiterated its commitment to transparency, legality, and citizen trust, and assured that any conduct contrary to institutional principles will be investigated and sanctioned according to law.

The department also issued a message noting that corruption involves more than one party and called on citizens to fulfill their obligations and avoid practices like bribery.

This position generated controversy among users and Tulum residents, who considered that the message attributed part of the responsibility to the citizen, leading to broad debate and criticism of the institutional stance.

The case gained prominence after a video circulated showing a municipal traffic officer receiving money from a driver, a situation citizens interpreted as a possible act of extortion.

The material provoked outrage among motorists and residents, who demanded immediate action from competent authorities.

Citizen reaction focused on demanding exemplary sanctions, considering that this type of conduct affects public trust and generates fear among those who travel daily through municipal roadways and depend on traffic police to ensure road safety.
