Tulum Merchants Expose Corruption in Electricity Commission

Merchants from the Centro neighborhood in Tulum have voiced their concerns over alleged corruption within the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The merchants claim that CFE officials demanded illicit payments to restore power following a technical failure. The accusation has led to community outrage and calls for an investigation and strict penalties for those involved.

The merchants argue that the power outage was due to a technical fault. However, they were told by CFE officials that power would only be restored if they paid an unspecified sum of money. One merchant, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, stated, “This is an abuse that directly affects our businesses and the livelihood of our families. We cannot allow those who should help us to become those who harm us.”

The complaint was shared on social media, with the hope of drawing the attention of the relevant authorities. The merchants are demanding an investigation into the incident and measures to prevent future abuses. The Tulum community is outraged, as they find it unacceptable for state company employees, responsible for providing an essential service, to engage in corrupt practices.

Community leaders and merchants have called for the intervention of the Attorney General's Office (FGR) and the CFE itself. They are also calling for the establishment of clear mechanisms to report corruption and stricter supervision of public officials. A local resident commented, “This not only affects merchants, but all citizens. We need to trust our institutions and take decisive action against corruption.”

The power outage and alleged extortion have had a direct impact on local businesses. Restaurants, grocery stores, and other small businesses have reported significant economic losses due to the lack of electricity. This incident has further eroded public trust in institutions and highlighted the vulnerability of tenants to illicit practices.

So far, the CFE has not made an official statement regarding the allegations. The affected merchants hope that their complaint will bring attention to the issue and encourage the implementation of preventative measures against similar abuses in the future.

This incident is not isolated; it adds to a growing list of corruption complaints within various sectors of the municipality. The situation emphasizes the urgent need to strengthen control and supervision mechanisms within public entities. The Tulum community is awaiting a strong response from authorities to restore confidence and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The demand remains clear: justice and transparency in the actions of those serving the citizens.
