Tulum Marks 18 Years as a Municipality with Solemn Public Session

18th anniversary of the municipality of tulum

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Tulum commemorated its 18th anniversary as an independent municipality on Friday with a Fourth Solemn Public Session attended by municipal, state, and federal authorities, who highlighted the town’s history, identity, and continued transformation.

The ceremony was led by Municipal President Diego Castañón Trejo and included the participation of Cristina Torres Gómez, Secretary of Government, representing the State Government. Members of the municipal council, including the Síndico and council members, as well as representatives of the Judicial and Legislative branches, were also present.

In his address, Castañón emphasized that the creation of Tulum as a municipality 18 years ago marked more than an administrative change.

“Eighteen years ago, a decisive step was taken in our collective destiny,” he said. “The creation of the municipality was not just a bureaucratic act; it was the recognition of our identity and our right to shape our own future.”

He underscored the importance of collaboration among federal, state, and municipal authorities to advance shared prosperity and reduce inequality, echoing priorities outlined by Governor Mara Lezama.

“Today, as Tulum reaches adulthood, we are at a defining moment,” Castañón added. “The challenges are significant, but from the time of the ancient Maya to the present, this community has demonstrated resilience. We renew our commitment to serve and to live up to the trust placed in us.”

Torres Gómez also addressed attendees, describing Tulum’s municipal independence as the result of collective effort and determination.

“Tulum was not born by chance,” she said. “It was born from struggle, from the conviction of men and women who believed in this sacred corner and were ready to write their own history.”

The session followed official protocol and formed part of broader activities organized to commemorate the anniversary — a milestone that organizers said strengthens civic pride and a sense of belonging among residents.

Since gaining municipal status in 2008, Tulum has experienced rapid growth, becoming one of Mexico’s most prominent tourism destinations. Officials noted that while development continues, the municipality remains committed to preserving its natural, cultural, and historical heritage — elements that have defined Tulum’s identity both nationally and internationally.

As Tulum enters its 18th year as a municipality, leaders framed the anniversary as both a celebration of progress and a reaffirmation of responsibility toward future generations.
