Tulum, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities have launched an investigation into the alleged issuance and sale of fake construction permits in Tulum, a scheme that could affect developers and create irregularities in numerous real estate projects currently underway in the area.
During the weekly “Tulum Comunica” press conference, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo announced that local officials detected signs that individuals have been providing counterfeit receipts and permits related to construction procedures that were not officially issued by the municipal government.
According to the mayor, among the irregular documentation, authorities have identified permits with issuance dates from three, four, and even five months ago that do not appear in the records of the corresponding municipal department upon review.
In response, the municipal government is coordinating with the State Prosecutor’s Office to conduct investigations and determine who might be behind the alleged issuance of these fake documents.
Castañón Trejo stated that authorities have identified four to five individuals who are currently under investigation for their possible involvement in these practices. However, he clarified that names cannot be revealed at this time while verification and evidence collection continues.
The mayor urged developers, investors, and individuals carrying out construction work in the municipality to visit the Urban Development Department directly, where they can receive official guidance for their procedures and avoid falling victim to such irregularities.
In that regard, he invited interested parties to approach the department head, Libertad, to verify the authenticity of permits or initiate formal processes with the appropriate authorities.
The mayor emphasized that the municipal administration will not tolerate practices that undermine legality in construction processes, particularly in a municipality like Tulum where urban growth and real estate development continue to expand.
