Cancun, Quintana Roo — A Tren Maya train on the Merida-Cancun route suffered a mechanical failure Wednesday night about 10 kilometers before reaching the Cancun station, according to passengers aboard the train.
Passengers reported that when the train stopped, crew members told them they would still reach their destination. They were asked to disembark and were transferred to another unit to continue their journey to the Cancun-Aeropuerto terminal.
Tren Maya officials launched an operation to move passengers to a replacement train. No injuries were reported.
Authorities said the train lost power and came to a halt roughly 10 kilometers from the Cancun station. Security personnel and National Guard officers maintained communication with the engineers and onboard staff to monitor the situation.
The operation involved sending another train to the site to transfer passengers and resume service. Firefighters and civil protection personnel also responded but were not allowed to assist directly.
The cause of the failure is under investigation.
