How Quintana Roo Uses Tree Mapping to Fight Climate Change

The government of Quintana Roo committed to the environment

Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Tree Mapping initiative is consolidating as a key tool to strengthen climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Quintana Roo.

Urban Tree Mapping: Science and Technology

Through an interinstitutional compilation, the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) and the College of the Southern Border (ECOSUR) are reinforcing the use of technology and scientific knowledge to protect and leverage the benefits of urban trees in the state’s main cities.

From the capital, Chetumal, environmental authorities highlighted that this program allows for the generation of precise and reliable information for urban planning, public decision-making, and the design of policies focused on sustainability and climate resilience.

Innovation for More Resilient Cities

The program includes training technical and research personnel in the use of a mobile application and a specialized digital platform for urban tree surveying and inventory. These actions are part of the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama.

The studies will allow for analysis of tree architecture, estimation of biomass and carbon content, as well as measurement of environmental parameters that demonstrate the climatic, social, and ecological benefits of trees in urban environments.

As part of the methodological strengthening of the Tree Mapping, cutting-edge technologies such as drones with multispectral cameras, thermal sensors, and LiDAR systems are being incorporated.

These tools will facilitate measurement of the urban heat island phenomenon and provide scientific data on temperature regulation, air quality improvement, and population well-being.

With this comprehensive approach, Quintana Roo is advancing toward more sustainable cities, reaffirming its commitment to evidence-based climate action, innovation, and academic cooperation.
