Tulum, Quintana Roo — A fatal accident on Federal Highway 307 near the entrance to the Aldea Tulum subdivision, approximately two kilometers from the city, left one person dead and another injured late Monday night. Authorities confirmed that excessive speed and alcohol impairment were the primary factors in the crash.
Details of the Collision
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. when emergency services received a 911 call reporting two unconscious individuals following a head-on collision between a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer. Upon arrival, first responders found the driver of a red Chevy—bearing Mexico City license plates 315-RUU—lying beside the wreckage in a pool of blood, with no vital signs. The passenger, also unconscious, required resuscitation before being transported for medical care.
Witnesses stated the Chevy was traveling south to north at high speed when the driver lost control, veering into the opposing lane and striking the trailer, which was en route to Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The impact completely destroyed the compact car.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Personnel from Civil Protection, Red Cross paramedics, and the private medical service RUM responded to the scene. Forensic specialists from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) initiated an investigation and transferred the deceased to the morgue for an autopsy pending family identification. The surviving victim was rushed to a hospital in Playa del Carmen for further treatment.
The highway remains a critical concern for local authorities due to recurring accidents attributed to reckless driving.
