Cancún, Quintana Roo — Reckless driving and excessive speed led to another early-morning tragedy this Sunday when a motorist caused a compact car to roll over, leaving an injured female passenger abandoned at the border between Isla Mujeres’ mainland and the municipality of Benito Juárez.
The crash occurred on the hazardous curve of Químico Pastrana Road, an area notorious for repeated accidents.
Emergency Response and Abandonment
A distress call alerted the 911 emergency system, mobilizing Isla Mujeres Municipal Police and Transit officers. They located a red Volkswagen sedan, license plate URY-595-H, lodged against a tree. Inside, authorities found a visibly injured woman who had been abandoned by the driver.
Paramedics from SUMS (Servicio de Urgencias Médicas del Sureste) provided first aid at the scene before transporting her to Cancún’s General Hospital Jesús Kumate Rodríguez. Preliminary reports suggest the driver was under the influence of alcohol and speeding, leading to loss of control. The vehicle overturned near a police checkpoint marking the boundary between the two municipalities.
Investigation and Ongoing Concerns
Authorities secured the wrecked vehicle and filed an official report with the transit agent to initiate an investigation. While no fatalities were reported, the incident has reignited calls for increased surveillance and improved signage at the curve, where multiple accidents—some fatal—have occurred in the past.
