Cancún, Quintana Roo — Three traffic police officers in Cancún are under investigation following allegations of extorting an Italian tourist for over 50,000 pesos (approximately $2,500 USD). The incident, which has drawn scrutiny from local authorities, was reported to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) after the victim sought assistance from his consulate.
Details of the Alleged Extortion
According to the complaint, the officers allegedly stopped the Italian national for a traffic violation and demanded 50,000 pesos in exchange for not impounding his vehicle or arresting him. Fearing detention, the tourist reportedly complied by transferring the funds.
The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) confirmed in a statement that it is cooperating with the FGE to clarify the incident and determine legal accountability. While the agency did not specify whether the accused officers remain on active duty, unofficial sources indicate they have stopped reporting to work, possibly to avoid arrest.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
The FGE has initiated a formal investigation into the alleged extortion, and arrest warrants are rumored to have been issued. The SMSCyT emphasized its commitment to due process but refrained from commenting further on the officers’ employment status.
The case has raised concerns about police misconduct in Cancún, a major tourist destination where interactions between law enforcement and foreign visitors are frequent. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the officers involved or the exact location of the alleged incident.
The SMSCyT has urged the public to report any misconduct by law enforcement, reaffirming its stance against corruption within its ranks. Further updates are expected as the FGE progresses with its inquiry.
