Isla Mujeres – Three U.S. citizens traveling aboard the recreational yacht “Carguito” were rescued this weekend after drifting near the Yucatán Peninsula with no propulsion or electrical power, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) reported.
The vessel had departed from Florida bound for Mexico when it experienced a mechanical failure that left it without energy or navigation capability. The crew activated a distress call that was channeled by the U.S. Coast Guard to Mexican authorities.
Personnel from the Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) of Isla Mujeres immediately went to the location aboard an MLB Defender boat, supported by the ARM “Alpheratz” ship of the Fifth Naval Region. Once the vessel was located, the three occupants were safely transferred to shore and the yacht was towed to the port of Isla Mujeres.
The Navy emphasized that the situation posed a serious risk to navigation safety, as the yacht was in a fishing area.
Upon arrival, authorities applied established protocols: International Health personnel conducted a first-contact medical assessment of the crew as a precautionary measure, while the Port Captaincy and immigration agents carried out the registration and corresponding procedures for the foreigners.
The three Americans are in good health and are now on solid ground. The yacht “Carguito” remains under guard at the port while the corresponding inspections are carried out.
