Teenager Accuses Grupo Orion Officers of Robbery in Chetumal

Police patrol car in Chetumal, Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A 17-year-old boy has accused members of the Grupo Orion, a special police unit under the direct command of Deputy Public Security Secretary Fernando Viveros Hernandez, of robbing him at gunpoint.

The teenager told authorities he works as a courier for a cleaning company. On April 20, his boss sent him to deliver an invoice for the sale of a motorcycle and collect the remaining payment. On his way back to the office, he stopped at the corner of Campeche and Chihuahua streets in the Calderitas community to buy roasted chicken for his family. Suddenly, a group of male and female officers in patrol car 12397 surrounded him and threatened him with rifles.

“They searched me and found the money. They asked where I got it, and I told them it was from the motorcycle sale. They asked me to prove it,” the teen said. He called his boss, who said he would come to the scene with documentation. But before his boss arrived, the officers told the teen to leave and warned him not to say anything or he would face consequences.

His boss found him crying and scared. The officers had taken 15,500 pesos (about $770). They went to file a complaint, which was recorded under investigation file FGCC/QROO/DA/084/04/2026. However, they have faced obstacles in identifying the patrol’s occupants. They learned that the officers are Navy personnel assigned as police and working directly under Viveros Hernandez.

Several witnesses, mostly neighbors in Calderitas, saw the officers search the teen and take his money. Officials at the Public Security Department reportedly told the victims that Grupo Orion has accumulated multiple similar complaints and that this was not the first time they had committed such abuses.
