Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Heavy rains in Quintana Roo’s capital caused a taxi to fall into a water-covered excavation on Francisco I. Madero Avenue, between Primo de Verdad and Cristóbal Colón streets, authorities said.
According to neighborhood reports, the section was closed to traffic due to ongoing roadwork and had warning signs in place. The driver allegedly ignored the restrictions and drove into the excavation, which was completely hidden by accumulated floodwater.
The front of the vehicle sank into the hole, requiring assistance to remove it. Images shared on social media showed complex rescue maneuvers. No injuries were reported, though the taxi sustained material damage.
Residents noted that flooding makes it difficult to identify ditches, excavations, and potholes, increasing accident risks during the rainy season. Officials urged drivers to exercise caution, respect road closures, and reduce speed on affected streets.
