Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a 2024 homicide in Playa del Carmen that authorities say stemmed from a drug trafficking turf war.
Following a months-long intelligence operation, investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office executed an arrest warrant for Carlos Adrián “N,” 27, in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. Officials notified him of his alleged involvement in the aggravated homicide of a woman identified as Mariel.
Investigations indicate the suspect did not act alone. Authorities say the crime was carried out in collusion with a man named Jonathan, under the direct orders of a third individual, José de Jesús, alias “El Gordo,” who is accused of planning the attack and providing the firearm used.
The motive for the killing is strictly linked to a territorial dispute over control of drug retail sales in Playa del Carmen, according to local officials. This line of inquiry suggests the individuals are part of a criminal structure dedicated to selling illicit substances in the tourist area, where control of sales points led to the attack on the victim.
After being presented to the prosecutor, a judge reviewed the evidence and ordered Carlos Adrián “N” to stand trial. As a precautionary measure, he was remanded to preventive detention for two years, ensuring he remains in custody while the judicial process moves toward sentencing.
The State Prosecutor’s Office continues search efforts to locate and capture Jonathan and “El Gordo” to fully clarify the events. This arrest is considered a crucial step in dismantling the criminal cell responsible for violence generated by the turf war in Playa del Carmen.
