Mahahual, Quintana Roo — The Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo announced the arrest of Miguel Ángel “N,” identified as the alleged perpetrator of an intentional fire at a beach club located in Mahahual, in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. The authority made the announcement through an official statement.
According to initial investigations by the FGE, the incident occurred during the early hours of Thursday at a restaurant and beach club on Huachinango Street. The investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly set fire to one of the palapas, causing the blaze to spread rapidly.
The fire destroyed approximately 250 palapas and also caused damage to recreational areas, furniture, and equipment at the establishment. The extent of the damage makes it one of the most significant recent incidents in this tourist area of the Costa Maya.
How Was the Suspect Detained?
Through coordinated investigative actions, both in the field and through desk research, the Attorney General’s Office managed to identify and track the alleged perpetrator. With support from the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the State Police, the capture of Miguel Ángel “N” was carried out. He was subsequently placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office to continue with the integration of the investigation file.
Why Is It Investigated as an Intentional Crime?
The authority maintains that the attack was intentional, as the subject allegedly approached the palapa area with the aim of starting the fire. Therefore, he is accused of intentional damage in the form of arson, having acted with premeditation and severely affecting tourism activity facilities.
During the constitutional term, the Public Prosecutor’s Office must define the legal situation of the accused, while investigations continue to determine if there is involvement of more people or possible additional motivations.
