Cozumel, Mexico — Students from Instituto Partenón Secundaria explored the rich biodiversity of Cozumel during the environmental fair "Discovering the Plants and Fungi of Cozumel," organized by the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) at Parque Urbano Corazón.

Promoting Environmental Awareness Among Youth

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, Director General of FPMC, emphasized the importance of engaging students at all educational levels in environmental awareness and education initiatives. She stated that these efforts align with the institutional commitment to the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, which encourages active participation from younger generations in protecting the natural environment.

During the event, biologist Adrián Andrés Tun Cano led students on an interpretive tour to learn about the diverse species of flora, fauna, and endemic fungi in Parque Urbano Corazón. Through his explanations, students gained a deeper understanding of the ecological significance of the local ecosystem and the importance of conservation.

Interactive Learning Through Games and Activities

The experience was complemented by interactive activities organized by the Pedagogía y Asistencia Social (PAS) team, which included educational games such as:

  • A memory game featuring fungi species
  • A bingo-style game highlighting trees from the Mayan world
  • Tetris and puzzles, many made from recycled materials

These activities reinforced the students' knowledge in a creative and engaging manner.

Invitation to Explore Cozumel’s Natural Heritage

At the conclusion of the event, Adrián Tun thanked the students for their participation and extended an invitation to other schools and community groups to visit Parque Urbano Corazón, describing it as an ideal educational and recreational space to learn about Cozumel’s biodiversity.

The fair served as a key initiative to connect Cozumel’s youth with the island’s natural heritage while fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.
