Boost Cancún Tourism by Strengthening Migration Systems

Cancún, Mexico — The elimination of the Non-Resident Tax (DNR) has not only impacted funds allocated for tourism promotion but has also significantly reduced the operational resources of the National Migration Institute (INM). This assessment was made by David Ortiz Mena, president of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council, who called for strengthening the INM to ensure efficient migration processes in high-traffic destinations like Cancún.

Regulatory Updates Needed for Efficient Migration Processes

Ortiz Mena emphasized the need to modernize regulations and procedures to enable the INM, a decentralized administrative body of the Federal Public Administration, to fulfill its duties effectively.

“We must work to update regulations and processes so that this federal administrative body can carry out its functions efficiently, especially in high-traffic destinations like Cancún,” he stated.

Improved Migration Treatment Benefits Tourism

Ortiz Mena also noted a decline in the number of tourists denied entry at Cancún International Airport. He attributed this improvement to policies implemented by the Quintana Roo state government aimed at enhancing visitor treatment and migration procedures.

These measures not only bolster the destination’s image but also improve the travel experience for international tourists—a critical factor in maintaining the Mexican Caribbean’s competitiveness.

Drastic Reduction in Rejected Tourists

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama reported a sharp decrease in the number of inadmissible travelers at Cancún International Airport, dropping from approximately 3,000 cases in previous years to just 200 currently.

This significant improvement stems from coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local authorities, as well as migration officials. Through working groups, these entities have focused on ensuring a dignified, safe, and respectful tourist experience without compromising border controls or national security.
