Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Sports tourism in Puerto Morelos is experiencing its strongest period to date. Since 2023, this sector has shown steady growth, and so far in 2025, officials estimate a 15% to 20% increase in events and the arrival of specialized visitors, according to Raúl Guadarrama García, Secretary of Sustainable Tourism.
Sports Tourism in Puerto Morelos Gains Momentum
Iconic events such as the "La Diosa del Mar" Fishing Tournament, the El Rey Polo, Summer Polo Cup, and Nations Polo Cup tournaments, as well as the Open Water Marathon—which held both regional and international editions this year—have solidified the municipality’s reputation as an attractive destination for sports enthusiasts. Additionally, the Puerto Morelos International Beach Volleyball Festival has helped diversify offerings and attract new audiences.
New Sports Disciplines Arrive on the Caribbean Coast
A key factor behind the surge in sports tourism has been the coordination between the local government and private promoters, facilitating the attraction of national and international competitions in emerging disciplines. Notable new events include:
- Ultimate Frisbee, featuring its first Beach Open and the upcoming Caribbean Classic
- Reef Race, an innovative multi-sport kayak competition
- Short Track MTB, promoted since 2024 along the Ruta de los Cenotes
Facilities such as the Isaac Hamui Sports Complex and natural spaces like the Ruta de los Cenotes have also been instrumental in hosting mountain biking events and outdoor activities.
Economic Impact and Local Benefits
Visitors traveling for sports-related reasons stay between two and five nights, with an estimated average expenditure of $4,000 to $7,500 pesos per person, covering lodging, food, registrations, and recreational activities.
"This type of tourism not only extends the average length of stay but also diversifies our offerings and helps counteract seasonality," said Guadarrama García.
