Sheinbaum Urges Isla Mujeres Business Owners to Report Extortion
Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum called on business owners in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, to file formal complaints if they have been victims of alleged extortion or corruption by municipal authorities, promising that all reports would be investigated according to the law.
Speaking during her daily morning press conference on July 29, Sheinbaum responded to questions about accusations from business owners who claimed irregularities have affected the construction sector and infrastructure projects in the island municipality.
The complaints emerged following a similar case in Tulum, where a municipal official was removed from his post after allegations of extorting local merchants. Business owners in Isla Mujeres say they face comparable problems involving permits, paperwork, and construction costs.
“These business owners should approach the security cabinet and, if they have any complaints, let everyone be investigated,” Sheinbaum said.
The president reiterated her administration’s commitment to fighting corruption and extortion, inviting anyone with evidence to present it to the appropriate legal authorities.
