Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Spain’s King Felipe VI will meet on June 25 at the National Palace, marking a new step in strengthening bilateral relations after years of political and diplomatic tensions.
The meeting comes one day before the Spanish monarch travels to Guadalajara to attend a 2026 World Cup match, part of a visit aimed at consolidating dialogue between the two nations.
The encounter is significant because Mexico-Spain relations have been strained in recent years, largely due to Mexico’s demand that the Spanish Crown acknowledge abuses committed during the Conquest. In March, King Felipe VI recognized that “many abuses” occurred during that period, a statement Mexico’s government viewed as a positive gesture.
Spain’s Royal Household said the visit takes place in a context of intensifying bilateral relations. Sheinbaum has insisted there is no diplomatic crisis and has expressed willingness to maintain a relationship of cooperation and mutual respect.
The June 25 meeting could serve as a new starting point to strengthen political, economic, and cultural ties between Mexico and Spain.
