Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama announced the approval of seven new projects for Cozumel and Mahahual during a meeting of the technical committee of the Cruise Tourism Welfare Trust, held on the island with participation from the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association.
“There are many more projects coming behind this trust, where we are very clear about what shared prosperity from the sea means,” Lezama told cruise line executives and tourism sector representatives.
Approved projects include the rehabilitation of the Cozumel boardwalk with a flagpole; rehabilitation of the Mahahual boardwalk; improvement of streets in downtown Mahahual; rehabilitation of Plaza El Faro; contracting of parametric insurance against catastrophic damage; strengthening of the Cozumel fire department; and studies for beach regeneration on the island.
Lezama said the works aim to shape the development of both destinations in the coming years for local residents and cruise visitors, under an investment scheme tied to international maritime arrivals.
The meeting was also attended by Senator Eugenio Segura, Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, Mahahual Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández, and state Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra.
Three of the announced projects:
- Rehabilitation of the Cozumel boardwalk with flagpole
- Strengthening of the Cozumel fire department
