Seven men charged with extortion in Cozumel, judge orders pretrial detention

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A judge has ordered seven men to stand trial on extortion charges for allegedly demanding monthly payments from a tour operator at the island’s Fiscal Pier, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced.

The suspects — identified as Bismarck Yahir “N,” Luis Diego “N,” Cuitláhuac “N,” Luis Fernando “N,” Álvaro “N,” Nelson “N,” and Zeus Israel “N” — were formally charged after prosecutors presented evidence gathered during the investigation. Zeus Israel “N” faces a prior case for the same crime against another victim.

According to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Kidnapping and Extortion, the alleged crimes date back to September 29, 2025, when the men reportedly arrived armed at a tour sales business at the Fiscal Pier and demanded the owner pay 50,000 pesos monthly as “derecho de piso,” or extortion fees.

The victim made the payments at the end of each month under threat, investigators said, before eventually filing a complaint that led to the criminal probe.

Based on the evidence presented, the judge ordered the seven suspects to be formally charged and imposed two years of pretrial detention while the investigation continues.
