Four Arrested in Cancun Hotel Zone With Drugs and High-Powered Rifles

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Four people were arrested in Cancun’s hotel zone after police found them with suspected drugs and multiple firearms, including two high-powered rifles, authorities said.

The suspects — identified as Joel Ernesto “N,” Rafael “N,” Ángel Leonardo “N” and Laura Victoria “N” — were detained on Boulevard Kukulcán during a joint patrol made up of officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the National Guard, the Navy and the Army.

According to officials, officers spotted a white Chevrolet Suburban parked on the shoulder with its trunk open and four people gathered around it. During an inspection, one of the men removed several bags containing a green, plant-like substance believed to be marijuana from a backpack and handed them to the others. When the group noticed police, they tried to get into the vehicle and flee, but were intercepted before they could leave.

What authorities seized

• 109 small bags of dried green plant material, believed to be marijuana;
• 32 small bags containing solid fragments, believed to be crystal methamphetamine;
• two long firearms;
• a .380-caliber handgun with a loaded magazine;
• four cell phones;
• backpacks, a bandolier and a handbag; and
• a white Chevrolet Suburban.

The suspects and all evidence were handed over to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Drug Dealing, which will determine their legal status.
