Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A wildfire in Puerto Aventuras has burned an estimated 400 hectares of vegetation, according to Playa del Carmen’s Civil Protection Department.
The fire, in an area known as “El Viejo,” is 100% under control and 75% extinguished, the department said in a statement.
The National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) is coordinating with the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters of Playa del Carmen to combat, control and extinguish the forest fire.
A total of 33 CONAFOR personnel, 15 operational staff and firefighters from Playa del Carmen Civil Protection, and six volunteers are working in the area to fully extinguish the blaze.
Municipal authorities said smoke that has been noticeable in some parts of the city is expected to gradually diminish as work progresses. Firefighters are also conducting patrols and monitoring jungle areas near the city where other fire points have been detected.
No injuries or cases of smoke inhalation have been reported, and the fire does not pose a threat to residents, Civil Protection said.
