Tulum Muralists Wanted for Climate Change Art Project

Tulum, Quintana Roo — The Sembrando Ciudades project has opened a call for mural artists residing in Cobá or Tulum, Quintana Roo, to participate in a public art intervention aimed at raising awareness about climate change, biocultural diversity, and environmental conservation.

A Community-Driven Artistic Initiative

The call targets socially engaged artists with experience in muralism, particularly in public spaces and participatory approaches. Selected artists will join a collective to transform 200 square meters of walls at the Casa de la Cultura in Cobá from July 2 to 20, 2025.

Participants will receive a gross payment of 13,111.89 pesos plus VAT, accident insurance, and the opportunity to engage in a unique artistic and community-driven process. Applicants must be available full-time from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. throughout the project and registered with Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT) as self-employed professionals.

Eligibility and Application Process

Requirements include:

  • Experience creating murals in public spaces
  • Current residency in Cobá or Tulum
  • Full availability during the project dates
  • Willingness to participate in community immersion activities, narrative collection, wall preparation, and collective conceptualization

The deadline for submissions is Saturday, June 14, at 6:00 p.m. Applications must be submitted via an online form, which can be requested by emailing [email protected]. Results will be announced via email on Tuesday, June 17, and selected candidates must confirm participation by Thursday, June 19, at 12:00 p.m.

Collaborative Partners

Sembrando Ciudades is an initiative fostering climate-resilient communities through nature-based solutions and participatory processes. The project is developed in collaboration with Mexico’s Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu), the Tulum Municipal Government, Comex, the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) Mexico, and Colectivo Tomate.

The project underscores the role of art in addressing pressing environmental challenges while strengthening community ties.
