Cancun, Quintana Roo — A large contingent of federal, state, and municipal security forces converged on the Cancun Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) Friday afternoon for a sweeping inspection operation.

Initial reports suggested the mobilization was in response to a prison fight, but authorities at the scene later confirmed it was a planned security sweep.

Personnel from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSC), the National Guard, and the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) participated in the operation, along with other law enforcement agencies.

According to the SSC, the goal was to “strengthen security conditions, verify compliance with internal protocols, and maintain order inside the Benito Juárez penitentiary.”

The operation began around 6:30 p.m. Officials have not yet released any results or findings. Authorities are expected to issue a statement in the coming hours with further details.
