Yucatán, Mexico — The Interinstitutional Committee on Red Tide has announced the lifting of the general sanitary ban on all marine species in Yucatán. The decision follows a detailed analysis of monitoring results conducted by the various involved agencies, guaranteeing that seafood products meet safety standards for consumption.
The committee also updated the sanitary status for the Yucatán coast. The status for the area from Progreso to Chelem has been changed from yellow to green, while the status for the area from Chelem to Celestún has been modified from red to yellow.
The session was chaired by Domitilo Carballo Cámara, Undersecretary of Protection against Sanitary Risks of the Yucatán Ministry of Health (SSY), who highlighted the institutional commitment to maintaining safe conditions for the consumption of marine products throughout the state.
Scientific Committee to Be Formed
During his address, Carballo Cámara thanked the trust placed in the Committee by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena and indicated that work is actively underway to form a Scientific Committee. This new body will have legal standing and will include the expertise of various researchers.
“It will be an organ that will strengthen evidence-based decision-making to safeguard the health of the Yucatecan population, guaranteeing technical rigor in all its decisions,” stated the state official.
As part of the reinforcement actions, the State Public Health Laboratory (LESP) will intensify the sampling of marine products destined for export. This measure aims to ensure compliance with international safety standards and strengthen confidence in Yucatán's seafood products.
The Interinstitutional Committee reiterated that it will maintain permanent monitoring of the red tide phenomenon and will provide timely information on any changes in the sanitary conditions of the Yucatán coast.
