Cancún, Quintana Roo — A small fire at a restaurant located at kilometer 13 of the Hotel Zone prompted the evacuation of approximately 50 people, including employees and customers, in an emergency reported on Friday night.
The first reports indicated that the fire occurred in the exhaust hood in the kitchen area. Employees began extinguishing the flames using several fire extinguishers while waiting for the arrival of firefighters, who have a base a few meters away.
The risky situation occurred around 8:30 p.m., when an employee of the Fish Fritanga restaurant reported a fire in the kitchen area. In response, firefighters went to the location in two units to attend to the emergency.
The employees indicated that it was the start of a fire in the exhaust hood, which was addressed by the firefighters with a hose line to extinguish the flames, with no injuries reported.
The incident was initially contained by the establishment’s own staff, using approximately 10 fire extinguishers, before the arrival of the firefighters. Preliminary information indicated that the fire caused damage to an electric oven and the exhaust hood.
The affected area covered a space of 3 by 2 meters in the kitchen area, and during the start of the conflagration, approximately 50 people were evacuated from the establishment as a precaution.
Emergencies in Hotel Zone
During the afternoon, lifeguard personnel at Gaviota Azul and Delfines beaches provided assistance to four swimmers who were dragged by strong waves after entering the sea, despite the placement of red flags on the beach.
Civil Protection personnel reported that they performed four aquatic rescues of adults and minors, due to being dragged by rip currents, after ignoring preventive instructions. The rescued individuals received attention on the beach for symptoms of fatigue, without requiring transport to a hospital.
