Residents Block Cancun Boulevard, Secure Release of Detained Man

Residents blocking a boulevard in Cancun with signs protesting police corruption

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The State Prosecutor’s Office released a man arrested on drug and firearm possession charges Friday night after residents of the Alfredo V. Bonfil neighborhood blocked a major boulevard, claiming his innocence.

State police officers detained Javier “N” on Plutarco Elías Calles Street, alleging he was carrying drugs and a firearm. He was handed over to the State Prosecutor’s Office.

Around 11 p.m., a group of residents blocked both directions of Colosio Boulevard, arguing that the man sells chickens and has no involvement in crime. Holding signs reading “Enough corruption,” the protesters accused officers from patrol unit 12380 of planting the drugs on him, calling it a common practice.

The blockade lasted nearly two hours, causing long traffic jams and frustration among motorists unable to reach their homes.

Eventually, the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the man’s release, which the crowd celebrated. Shortly after, the freed man arrived to cheers of “Javi, Javi!” and “Yes, we did it!”

“Free chicken for a week, at least,” one resident joked.
