Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A video circulating on social media captured the emotional moment when civil protection personnel freed a white turtle that had become stranded on a beach in Isla Mujeres.
The incident was recorded by a beachgoer after a group of children playing on the sand discovered the turtle trapped among the rocks when their ball rolled near the water.
The children immediately called for help, and civil protection officers arrived to carry out the necessary maneuvers to free the animal. In the video, rescuers can be seen carefully wrapping a rope around the turtle to move it and pull it out from between the stones. After several attempts, they succeeded and returned the turtle to the sea.
Onlookers cheered as the turtle swam away. The white turtle, also known as the green sea turtle, is one of the largest species found along Mexico’s coasts, measuring up to 1.93 meters (6.3 feet) and weighing more than 235 kilograms (518 pounds).
Local authorities urged beachgoers and fishermen to prioritize the care and preservation of this species, which is listed as endangered. They called on anyone who finds stranded turtles to report them immediately.
