Cancún, Quintana Roo — A total of 47 individuals have visited the Civil Registry offices in Cancún to request gender changes on their official documents, according to local authorities. However, four minors were denied the procedure for failing to meet the legal requirement of being at least 18 years old.

Minors Show Interest but Face Rejection

Eduardo Kuyoc Rodríguez, director of the Benito Juárez Civil Registry, confirmed that while minors have demonstrated significant interest in the process, their applications were rejected due to age restrictions. Many applicants also lacked necessary documentation, such as updated birth certificates or valid identification, further delaying or preventing the completion of their requests.

The most common gender changes sought include male-to-female, female-to-male, and nonbinary designations—a legal term for individuals who do not identify with a specific gender.

Applicants from Across the Region

Though most applicants reside in Cancún, the registry has also processed requests from individuals in Cozumel and Othón P. Blanco. The state’s Civil Registry Directorate has begun processing these cases immediately upon submission.

Same-Sex Marriage Ceremony Held

As part of the "Haz que tu identidad brille" ("Let Your Identity Shine") initiative, the registry recently officiated a same-sex marriage between two women at its office near Parque de Las Palapas.

Diana, one of the newlyweds, expressed relief at the legal recognition. "Being able to complete these procedures gives us peace of mind. Society can now see us as we truly are, not as outsiders. Having legal certainty validates the identity we’ve longed for," she said while walking through the park with her partner, Damaris.

The Civil Registry continues to handle a high volume of requests, with officials emphasizing the importance of submitting complete documentation to avoid delays.
