Quintana Roo Reports 153 Dengue Cases, Leads Yucatan Peninsula in Infections

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo recorded 20 new dengue infections in the past week, bringing the total to 153 cases so far in 2026, according to state health authorities. The figure places the state sixth nationally in incidence rate, at 7.5 cases per 100,000 residents.

Of the total cases, six were classified as severe dengue, 51 presented warning signs, and the remainder were non-severe. The state also confirmed one death linked to the disease, as fatalities rose nationwide.

Health officials reported that dengue serotypes 2, 3, and 4 are circulating in Quintana Roo, raising concerns about complications for people contracting a different strain than previous infections.

Women accounted for 54% of infections and men 46%. The municipalities of Bacalar and Othón P. Blanco remain under the highest alert. Bacalar has the state’s highest incidence rate at 9.86 cases per 100,000 residents, while Chetumal reached 6.77. The remaining municipalities are classified under yellow or green alert.

In response, the Quintana Roo Health Department has conducted intensive fumigation campaigns across all 11 municipalities from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Officials urge residents to open doors and windows during spraying to maximize the insecticide’s effectiveness against adult mosquitoes, which transmit dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

The department also reiterated its “Lava, Tapa, Voltea y Tira” (Wash, Cover, Turn over, and Discard) strategy to eliminate breeding sites. More than 80% of mosquito breeding grounds are found in patios and homes, particularly in containers that hold standing water.

Dr. Luis Gerardo Gálvez emphasized that prevention remains the most effective tool. “It is important to go immediately to a medical unit if you have fever, severe headache, muscle pain, or bleeding, as timely care can prevent serious complications and reduce the risk of death,” he said.

Neighboring states reported far fewer cases: Yucatán has 15 confirmed infections and Campeche 16, highlighting Quintana Roo’s disproportionate burden in the Yucatan Peninsula.
