Quintana Roo Officials Urge Prevention as Summer Vacation Begins: Avoid Accidents, Fraud

Cancún, Quintana Roo — As the summer vacation period begins, Quintana Roo’s Public Security Department has called on residents and visitors to step up prevention measures to reduce risks on highways, beaches, and homes, emphasizing that safety also depends on citizen participation.

Security Secretary Julio César Gómez Torres stressed that prevention is key to avoiding accidents, extortion, fraud, and other incidents that typically increase during high-mobility seasons.

“Prevention saves lives. If you take all prevention measures, the possibility of suffering any mishap is minimized,” Gómez Torres said.

Recommendations issued by the official include checking vehicle mechanical conditions before hitting the road, driving only during daylight, avoiding driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol, always using seat belts, and following instructions from emergency services and lifeguards on beaches.

He also urged those traveling to leave their homes properly secured and stay alert to avoid falling victim to telephone fraud or extortion.

Gómez Torres explained that these actions are part of a comprehensive security strategy that not only targets crime but also prevents risky situations through programs such as Escuela Segura, Comunidad Segura, Juventud Segura, Mujer Segura, and Empresa Segura, along with coordinated efforts among authorities at all three levels of government.

“If we truly apply the measures that each of us as citizens must apply, the possibility of having an unpleasant moment during our vacations is minimized,” he added.

The official reiterated that coordination between institutions and a culture of prevention are fundamental to maintaining peace and ensuring safe vacations for both residents and the thousands of tourists visiting Quintana Roo.
