Mahahual, Quintana Roo — The head of Quintana Roo’s Ecology and Environment Department, Óscar Rébora Aguilera, stated that the proposed Perfect Day México project in Mahahual cannot be compared to the canceled fourth pier in Cozumel, as it is at a different stage in the environmental process.
Unlike the Cozumel pier, which was canceled due to irregularities in its Environmental Impact Statement, the tourist project promoted by Royal Caribbean is still under evaluation by the federal Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat.
Rébora Aguilera explained that the local Ecological Zoning Program committee in Othón P. Blanco will define the guidelines for land use and development in the area. These guidelines aim to ensure a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation.
The official acknowledged concerns from social and environmental sectors but emphasized that no final decision has been made. The public consultation phase has concluded, and any potential impact on ecosystems like manglares and coral reefs will be reviewed during the evaluation.
The Perfect Day México project is shaping up to be one of the most significant tourism investments in southern Quintana Roo. Its viability will depend on meeting updated environmental criteria and the final response from the federal environmental authority.
