Cancún, Mexico — Two hotels in Quintana Roo, Moon Palace and Mayakoba, have been selected as base camps for the 2026 World Cup. This development is expected to increase tourist traffic and bring players from the World Cup to the Mexican Caribbean.
Rodrigo de la Peña, President of the Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, explained that this will lead to increased occupancy rates for the tourist destination, which translates into greater economic benefits. Negotiations with FIFA are ongoing.
“There are already two hotels that will be host sites, and this is important for us, although it is necessary to work on the facilities, meet requirements, and also on the issue of food for the teams,” he stated. “Surely with these two, more will come, as they are stepping up and making efforts with FIFA,” he added.
He recalled that the game draw will take place in December, which will launch a promotional campaign for the Mexican Caribbean with greater force to attract more tourists from the various national teams. To this end, the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council has held meetings with FIFA to secure official events in the destinations.
“Starting in December, the strongest promotional reinforcement will come,” he emphasized.
Quintana Roo Aims to Host a FIFA Fan Fest
The estimate is that up to five million tourists will come to Mexico for the 2026 World Cup alone, with the Cancún Airport serving as the entry point. Because of this, the hotel sector is promoting efforts to capture higher hotel occupancy during the sporting event.
A total of 104 matches will be played across the three host cities. Mexico will host 13 matches, including the opening ceremony at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the only stadium in history that can claim to have hosted three World Cup opening ceremonies.
Governor Mara Lezama announced the first host hotels, and more activities are being sought for Quintana Roo, such as a FIFA Fan Fest, to position the state in the sports tourism market.
What is a Base Camp?
A team base camp is a combination of a training site and accommodation that will serve as the main base for teams during the group stage, where they will train, rest, and prepare for their matches.
