Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama announced plans to convert the current Chetumal General Hospital into a new university campus that will offer medical degrees and other programs, expanding educational opportunities in the state.
The governor said the existing hospital building will become a “Rosario Castellanos” University campus once the new Chetumal General Hospital is completed. The university will offer medicine, nursing, psychology, data science engineering, economics, and development programs.
“For young people who want to study medicine and haven’t been able to get into the Autonomous University of Quintana Roo, this is good news,” Lezama said during the announcement.
The Rosario Castellanos universities are a federal program promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. Quintana Roo will get two campuses — one in Playa del Carmen and another in Chetumal using the vacated hospital building.
Lezama said technical visits and meetings have already taken place, and officials are now ready to sign agreements with federal authorities for the property transfer and budget approvals.
The Playa del Carmen campus is expected to open during this academic year, with the Chetumal campus following next year.
The governor emphasized that the current hospital facilities won’t be abandoned but will be repurposed with their existing consultation rooms. “That’s what it means to govern differently,” she said.
