Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Deputy Jorge Sanén, coordinator of the Morena Legislative Group in the State Congress, announced that the XVIII Legislature has presented a decree initiative to declare the year 2026 as the “Year of the 40th Anniversary of the Creation of the Anthem of the Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo.” This move aims to recognize one of the most representative symbols of Quintana Roo’s identity.
Jorge Sanén explained that this legislative proposal seeks to strengthen historical memory, social cohesion, and the sense of belonging among Quintana Roo residents by highlighting the cultural, civic, and symbolic value of the State Anthem. The anthem has accompanied the public, educational, and institutional life of Quintana Roo for four decades.
“The Quintana Roo Anthem is not just a musical composition; it is a profound expression of our history, our Mayan roots, our natural wealth, and the values that unite us as a people: peace, justice, freedom, and work,” stated the legislator.
The deputy noted that the initiative will allow public institutions to incorporate this commemoration in their official correspondence and civic acts throughout 2026. It will promote cultural, educational, and community actions that reinforce knowledge and respect for the state’s symbols, especially among children and youth.
Sanén emphasized that this recognition aligns with a government vision that values identity and culture as pillars of social development. “Strengthening our symbols also means strengthening our unity as a society and reaffirming pride in belonging to Quintana Roo,” he added.
The initiative recognizes the creative work of Ramón Iván Suárez Caamal, author of the lyrics, and Marco Ramírez Canul, composer of the anthem’s music. Their work was first performed on January 12, 1986, and officially adopted as a state symbol on the same day.
In this context, Jorge Sanén highlighted that December 15 marks the birthday of Marco Ramírez Canul, born on December 15, 1952, in Chetumal, Quintana Roo. He considered this date an opportune moment to pay tribute to those who have contributed invaluably to the state’s cultural heritage.
“Recognizing our anthem means recognizing our history, our identity, and the people who have built it. From Congress, we will continue promoting initiatives that strengthen collective memory and consolidate the unity of the Quintana Roo people,” concluded Jorge Sanén.
