Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo is bracing for a dangerous mix of extreme heat, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong wind gusts over the coming hours, driven by a trough over the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula combined with the advance of Tropical Wave 2 over southeastern Mexico.
According to the forecast from the State Civil Protection Coordination, rainfall accumulations of 25 to 50 millimeters are expected, along with wind gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour, mainly in coastal and maritime areas.
The report warns that conditions will remain “very hot” to “extremely hot” in several municipalities, with heat index values potentially reaching 44 degrees Celsius.
One of the hardest-hit areas by the intense heat will be Lázaro Cárdenas, where maximum temperatures of 39 to 41 degrees are forecast, with a heat index of up to 44 degrees and thunderstorms expected during the day.
In Benito Juárez, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, and Othón P. Blanco, intervals of heavy showers accompanied by electrical activity are also expected, with temperatures ranging from 33 to 38 degrees Celsius.
Satellite imagery shows extensive cloud bands covering much of the Yucatan Peninsula and the western Caribbean, creating conditions favorable for rapidly forming storms, lightning, and short-duration intense rainfall.
Civil Protection also warned of elevated waves of 3 to 5 feet in the Yucatan Channel and along Quintana Roo’s coasts, urging small vessels, fishermen, and those engaged in recreational water activities to take extreme precautions.
In central and southern municipalities such as Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos, temperatures of up to 39 degrees are forecast, combined with high humidity near 95 percent, significantly increasing the risk of heat stroke and dehydration.
Authorities recommend avoiding prolonged physical activity under the sun, staying constantly hydrated, and wearing light-colored, loose clothing to reduce the impact of high temperatures.
Residents are urged to stay alert to official weather advisories, as atmospheric conditions could change rapidly during the day due to moisture from the Caribbean Sea and the movement of tropical systems over southeastern Mexico.
