Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of President Estefanía Mercado successfully concluded the first chapter of "México en Playa del Carmen," featuring 300 artists from Querétaro and the local community. The week-long cultural celebration took place at Plaza 28 de Julio, the School of Artistic Initiation associated with INBAL, and the local Art Gallery.
A Week of Diverse Performances and Exhibitions
Thousands of residents and tourists enjoyed a rich program that included symphonic and traditional music, huapango, ska, marimba, reggae, storytelling, flamenco, circus acts, and crafts. The event also showcased a collective exhibition by 22 painters from Querétaro.
The initiative was organized by the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts, along with the Secretariats of Tourism and Economic Development and Investment Attraction. Santiago Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, Director General of the cultural institute, stated, "We are deeply grateful for the support of our Municipal President and the citizens who enjoyed the full program."
The Office of the Mayor’s Unit for Shows and Recreational Activities played a key role in coordinating the festivities.
Artistic Contributions from Querétaro
Playa del Carmen received two artistic gifts from Querétaro: the mural Viva en paso y copal by Edgar Alan Uribe Rodríguez, located on Avenida 30 at Calle 10, and a symbolic bull shark sculpture featuring imagery of the Danza de las Pastoras from Amealco, painted by Aline C. Ambriz.
Representatives from Querétaro included the Folkloric Ballet of the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Los Banyasos, the Huapango Gorrión Huasteco Trio, Voces Concertistas, and Korazount Ska. The delegation was supported by Tourism Secretary Mariana Ortiz Cabrera, Culture Secretary Martha Daniela Salgado, and International Relations Secretary Daniela Quintana Mena.
Local Playa del Carmen artists also participated, such as the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts Ballet "Lolbé," the Playa del Carmen Typical and Youth Symphony Orchestras, Santuario Reggae, De Oro Danza De Gabo Marcel, TH Danza by Tony Hernández, and "Kin Wac," among others.
Workshops and Future Events
Master classes and workshops on Querétaro-style huapango and oil landscape painting were held at the School of Artistic Initiation associated with INBAL.
Martínez Cuéllar announced upcoming cultural exchanges, stating, "We are already preparing for the arrival of Yucatán’s cultural community in a few months, followed by Oaxaca, Nuevo León, and Puebla. We invite all families to attend these free events."
The event underscored Playa del Carmen’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange and celebrating Mexico’s diverse artistic traditions.
