Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The Municipal Government, under the leadership of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has reaffirmed its commitment to the conservation of sea turtles by implementing enhanced surveillance measures across key nesting beaches. These efforts are part of the ongoing 2025 Nesting Season, a critical period for the survival of this endangered species.

Strengthening Patrols and Protection

The Department of Environment and Ecology, in collaboration with the Turtle Camp, has expanded operations along vital nesting sites, including Icaco, Media Luna, Bachilleres, and La Guadalupana beaches. Jireth Gracía, head of the Turtle Camp, explained that volunteers conduct nightly patrols to locate female turtles arriving to lay their eggs.

"We use specialized techniques to ensure the turtles can deposit their eggs safely, which are then carefully relocated for protection," Gracía stated.

A Dire Survival Rate

The survival prospects for sea turtles remain alarming, with statistics indicating that only one in every thousand hatchlings reaches adulthood. This stark reality underscores the importance of safeguarding every nest to maximize the chances of survival for emerging hatchlings.

"Protecting these nests is essential—every single one matters," Gracía emphasized.

Community Involvement Crucial

Gracía also highlighted the need for broader community participation in conservation efforts. She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any threats to sea turtles through the 24-hour hotline, Tortucel, at 998-490-2675.

"The cooperation between the government, volunteers, and the community is vital to securing a better future for sea turtles in Isla Mujeres," she added.

Through these initiatives and a call for public engagement, Isla Mujeres continues to position itself as a leader in marine biodiversity conservation.
