Profeco’s Gasoline Tip: How to Get Full Liters Every Time

Profeco reveals how to request gasoline to receive full liters and avoid fraud

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has filed 43 complaints with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) for the sale of incomplete liters of gasoline, a practice that affects the economy of millions of motorists.

The actions stem from the Extraordinary Verification Operation, conducted jointly with the Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA), with the objective of detecting irregularities in service stations across the country.

The operation concluded on December 16, after reviewing 230 service stations. During the inspections, Profeco detected that some gas stations were not dispensing full liters of fuel.

As a result, 780 measurement instruments were immobilized and ASEA imposed total temporary closures on 161 stations for non-compliance with environmental regulations. The official statement does not specify the names of the sanctioned gas stations.

Surveillance will continue through ordinary operations under the responsibility of the Subprocurator’s Office for Verification and Trust Defense. If new irregularities are detected, sanctions or criminal complaints will be applied.

How to Report Irregularities When Refueling Gasoline

Profeco urges consumers to report any anomalies detected when refueling. These complaints help identify patterns of abuse and strengthen supervision over service stations.

This program is part of the National Strategy to Promote Gasoline Price Stabilization, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, which has allowed a reduction of up to 4% in the price of regular gasoline since February.

Average Price of Gasoline in Mexico

According to Profeco, the national average price per liter of regular gasoline is 23.58 pesos, with regional figures varying as follows:

  • South: 23.82 pesos
  • Southeast: 24.18 pesos
  • Northwest: 23.43 pesos
  • Northeast: 23.26 pesos
  • North: 22.73 pesos
  • Center: 23.61 pesos
  • West: 23.86 pesos
  • Gulf: 23.73 pesos

Where to Refuel Gasoline and Where to Avoid It

Profeco has a virtual map that allows users to consult which gas stations sell at fair prices and which offer higher prices. This tool is constantly updated and is part of the “Who’s Who in Fuels” program.

Additionally, the Profeco prosecutor periodically disseminates regional lists with the best and worst evaluated stations regarding prices and compliance with regulations.

How to Request Gasoline to Receive Full Liters

Profeco recommends a simple and effective strategy to avoid fraud when refueling gasoline. Instead of requesting fuel in pesos, it is suggested to directly request the quantity in liters.

For example, if you want to refuel the equivalent of 200 pesos, ask for 10 liters instead of mentioning the amount. This way, you reduce the risk of receiving less fuel than you pay for and force the measurement to be exact.

Applications and Seals That Help You Choose Better

To reinforce consumer confidence, Profeco has the LitroxLitro application, which allows users to locate gas stations certified for dispensing full liters.

Another way to verify is to check that the pumps have the hologram of the Accredited Verification Union (UVA), which indicates that the measurement instruments have been reviewed and comply with current regulations.

These tools allow motorists to make informed decisions and protect their money every time they refuel.
