Power Outage in Cancun Triggers Second Road Blockade in Five Days

Residents burning objects on a road to block traffic during a protest over a power outage in Cancun

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Villas Otoch Paraíso neighborhood blocked a section of Avenida Niños Héroes for the second time in five days on Monday evening, demanding that authorities restore electricity after a blackout.

The protest began around 8:30 p.m. in the Supermanzana 259 area, where residents set fire to various objects placed on the roadway to pressure officials to fix the power failure. A crew from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrived shortly after and repaired a faulty transformer serving a row of homes.

Power was restored quickly, and residents lifted the blockade around 10:00 p.m., allowing traffic to resume. Municipal police officers diverted vehicles and maintained surveillance, while firefighters remained on standby to prevent any incidents from the burning objects.

Some residents said power failures have become frequent because the neighborhood’s transformers are worn out and need replacement. Last Wednesday, residents of the same area blocked the road after being without electricity since morning due to a transformer failure, which was fixed hours later.

On Sunday night, residents of the Residencial Turquesa neighborhood in Supermanzana 249 protested after being without power for 24 hours. They surrounded a CFE inspector, which sped up the repair, and the problem was resolved hours later.
