Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The company that operates the Playaparq parking meter system in Playa del Carmen is still waiting for the city to relocate 103 parking spaces that were removed for renovation work on Avenida 10 Norte, according to the company’s general manager.
Pedro de Velasco, general manager of Promotora de Reordenamiento Urbano (PRU), the concessionaire behind Playaparq, said the concession agreement gives authorities 30 days to reassign affected spaces within the concession area. But that deadline has been far exceeded — about eight months have passed since construction began, with no definitive solution in sight.
De Velasco said the company is in ongoing talks with municipal authorities to find an alternative that compensates for the lost spaces without affecting urban mobility or the system’s operation.
He acknowledged that any change involving expansion or redefinition of the concession zone requires additional technical studies and input from various municipal bodies, including the City Council, making the process more complex.
Still, he expressed confidence that agreements with the Mobility Department could identify new locations for the pending spaces, prioritizing options that improve traffic flow and parking organization in the area.
De Velasco clarified that the company does not plan to request an expansion of the concession zone, so efforts focus solely on replacing the spaces originally stipulated in the concession contract.
