Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Local officials will launch a survey in May targeting young residents to identify critical needs for educational infrastructure, including where new schools are required.
The survey will target individuals aged 12 to 29, serving as a tool to pinpoint areas lacking adequate school facilities, according to city councilor Matilde Carrillo Véjar.
Carrillo Véjar, who heads the Municipal Commission for Youth Development, highlighted Puerto Aventuras as a specific case, noting the community lacks at least one upper secondary school despite significant population growth.
She stated that the shortage of educational spaces is a nationwide issue, not just in Playa del Carmen, and that alternatives must be found to ensure all young people have access to schooling.
The councilor acknowledged that the construction of a new Colegio de Bachilleres in Playa del Carmen, announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum during her recent visit to Quintana Roo, will not be sufficient on its own but represents a significant step forward for those seeking to continue their upper secondary education.
