The creation of the Torneo de Barrios Rumbo al Mundial de México 2026 (Neighborhood Tournament on the Road to the 2026 World Cup) was announced, an initiative that will open its doors to all talent in the region.
The year 2026 is set to be a major year for sports in Mexico, as the country will be one of the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026 alongside the United States and Canada. Playa del Carmen will join in the soccer activities taking place across the nation.

The Torneo de Barrios Rumbo al Mundial 2026 in Playa del Carmen is an event that aims to be a space for athletes from different neighborhoods to enjoy the sport at its finest. It is scheduled to begin on September 11, with a preliminary meeting set for September 10.

The proposal, supported by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, aligns with the "Modelo Playa," which fosters citizen participation and the strengthening of communities.
According to Cancún Mío, in 2025, the Sports Institute allocated 5 million pesos to update 12 fields and train 50 coaches. The tournament also aims to find local talent for competitions at the state level, including scouting by clubs such as Inter Playa del Carmen, which is part of the Liga Premier.
