Structures Collapse at Abandoned Hotel in Playa del Carmen Tourist Zone

Crumbled concrete and debris from the abandoned Hotel Agua Azul scattered across the sidewalk on Avenida 10 in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Part of an abandoned hotel collapsed early Thursday in a busy section of 10th Avenue, raising alarm among nearby residents and shop owners.

The failure occurred on Avenida 10 between Calles 8 and 10, about one block from the heavily trafficked Quinta Avenida. The sections that gave way belonged to the Hotel Agua Azul, a property that locals say has sat abandoned for roughly two decades amid a legal dispute.

Debris from the structure landed on the sidewalk, an area lined with commercial businesses. Neighbors said materials, including chunks of concrete, had fallen from the building before, keeping concerns about its condition alive.

Municipal Police officers responded to the report and cordoned off the affected area. No injuries were reported. Officials were waiting for Civil Protection personnel to inspect the structure and determine what measures to take.

Residents Call for Building Inspection

Residents asked authorities to assess the condition of the hotel and the businesses still operating on its ground floor. The review is expected to establish whether additional risks exist for workers, customers and pedestrians passing through the tourism corridor.
