10th Annual Tamal and Atole Fair in Playa del Carmen: A Culinary Tradition

Playa del Carmen is set to host the 10th annual Tamal and Atole Fair on February 2nd. The event is aimed at promoting tourism in the city and is expected to be one of the first major events of the year. The fair will take place at the 28th of July square in celebration of Candlemas Day.

The fair, which has become a tradition in the city, will also feature a competition for the best tamal. The event is being organized by the Secretariats of Tourism and Economic Development and Investment Attraction.

Antón Bojórquez, head of the Economic Development and Investment Attraction, said that the event is not only a tradition but also a boost to the local economy. He noted that the fair allows families to market their products. "This is significant for families, as around 60 participants are expected to make between 500 and two thousand tamales each," he said. The event will run from 5 to 10 PM.

Estefanía Hernández Flores, the secretary of Tourism, believes that the fair will enhance the image of Playa del Carmen as a tourist destination. "This event is one of 70 that will take place in 2025. It's a platform for the world to learn about our culture and enjoy the culinary richness of Playa del Carmen, as well as promoting regional tourism," she said.

The organizing committee is led by renowned local chef, Héctor Escobedo. He has invited schools, hotels, restaurants, and various consumption centers to participate in the event. Candlemas Day is a traditional event in Mexico when tamales are consumed, often associated with the cutting of the Three Kings cake that occurs on January 6th.

Escobedo also announced that representatives from various states and countries from Central and South America are expected to attend the event. The fair will not only feature the traditional Mexican dish for sale but will also award the three best tamales.
