Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen plans to expand its sports offerings by adding four new disciplines at its municipal training centers starting in September, aiming to provide more training options for children and teenagers.
Alberto “Beto” López, director of the Municipal Sports Institute, said the city is working to integrate table tennis, skateboarding, BMX, and frontenis into the program. The move will strengthen a municipal sports roster that already includes more than 20 specialties.
About 500 young people currently participate in the training centers, which serve as a talent pipeline to identify and prepare future representatives for state, regional, and national competitions.
López noted that athletes from Playa del Carmen contributed the highest number of medals for Quintana Roo in national competitions, reflecting the growth of local sports and the need to continue strengthening athlete preparation.
“We want to keep growing and provide more opportunities for young people to practice sports. We are working to open new disciplines and improve the spaces where our athletes train,” López said.
The Sports Institute also coordinates with the DIF system and other municipal agencies to promote programs that support youth development through physical activity, healthy coexistence, and active lifestyles.
Registration for the training centers remains open at the Poliforum in the Ejido neighborhood, where residents can learn about available disciplines and join municipal sports programs.
