Playa del Carmen Boosts LGBTIQ+ Safety & Inclusion

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The city of Playa del Carmen is advancing initiatives to enhance safety and visibility for the LGBTIQ+ community through training programs, agreements, and public awareness campaigns. The efforts, led by the Directorate of Sexual Diversity under José Gabriel Pérez Álvarez and supported by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, aim to eliminate discrimination within security forces and foster empathy in public services.

Training Security Personnel in Sensitivity and Rights

The strategy includes specialized training for security personnel on mental health, empathy, and human rights to ensure proper treatment of LGBTIQ+ individuals, particularly transgender people, who have historically faced rights violations.

“Identity must be respected,” emphasized Pérez Álvarez regarding transgender rights.

“When someone is a victim, the first thing they seek is support, not discrimination,” he stated.

Pérez Álvarez cited a case in Tulum where a transgender individual sought assistance in Playa del Carmen and received full support, including after-hours accompaniment, to file a formal complaint.

“It’s not just about adhering to a schedule but providing genuine support,” he remarked.

Agreements and Public Visibility Efforts

Recent actions include a collaboration with the Women’s Institute to guarantee services for transgender women and their inclusion in official regulations, breaking down administrative barriers. Additionally, forums promoting visibility have been held in universities and public spaces to encourage empathy and respect.

Regarding transgender women’s access to public restrooms, Pérez Álvarez clarified that the initiative does not advocate for “neutral” or “third” bathrooms, as this could perpetuate segregation.

“The goal is not to indoctrinate but to raise awareness through respect,” he affirmed.

Recognition and Upcoming Events

Playa del Carmen was recently honored at the Pride Mexico Awards and will host a national LGBTIQ+ visibility event in August, followed by a related national congress.

The city’s efforts underscore its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where the rights and dignity of all individuals are upheld.
