Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — At the start of the high season, the port of Playa del Carmen was closed to small vessels from 7:00 a.m. due to wind gusts occurring in the coastal area. This forced about 20 nautical units, primarily located in the city center, to anchor.
Since Monday morning, wind gusts of up to 30 kilometers per hour have been recorded along the coast. Although not severe, these conditions made it difficult for small vessels such as boats or kayaks to operate, leading the Port Captaincy of Playa del Carmen to suspend this segment.
Regarding traffic at the federal crossing with ferries to Cozumel, it continued normally on a date when the highest passenger transfer occurs as people seek to spend the Christmas holidays on the “island of swallows.”
Despite the closure of small vessels, José Gómez Burgos, secretary of the Caribbean Sea tourism cooperative, stated that they did not expect a strong uptick at the beginning of this week, but rather until Thursday, precisely on Christmas.
“We are still low and will be waiting for an uptick until Christmas and from there until the end of the year, but the truth is that we come from slow days because people are just arriving in the city, and full occupancy is not yet reported,” said Gómez Burgos.
This organization provides various services, such as offshore tours on small vessels where sport fishing, snorkeling, and even diving can be conducted. This is the guild of tourist fishermen mainly located at El Recodo beach.
Last week, these tourism service providers were making preparations for the most active season of the year, after concluding the fishing season, which in 2025 did not have good catches of species.
“We are already ready to receive tourism, we just hope that the good weather improves, that no storm comes, but in this season it is difficult for that to happen, but we are still vigilant,” he added.
