Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado led a community event on Earth Day, bringing together dozens of young people to paint a mural focused on environmental awareness and cultural diversity.
The event, called “Tequios por la Tierra y Murales Mundialistas,” took place at Xca-Ha Park and was organized by the municipal Youth Institute, headed by José Gabriel Pérez Álvarez. Participants created a collective mural with a world-cup theme, incorporating messages about caring for the environment, unity, and cultural diversity.
“Today we are not just painting a mural; we are building community and sowing awareness,” Mercado said. “The youth of Playa del Carmen are agents of change and protagonists of a more sustainable future.”
The mayor emphasized the urgency of addressing issues such as pollution and the deterioration of public spaces. “We cannot be indifferent to the damage to our environment. Recovering our parks, caring for our green areas, and fostering social co-responsibility is everyone’s task,” she said.
Mercado said her administration will continue promoting public policies that encourage citizen participation, especially among young people. “When young people take ownership of their spaces and participate actively, we build stronger, more united communities with a greater sense of belonging,” she added.
The event also included integration activities and an official photograph. Officials attending included Karen Alejandra Román Flores, technical secretary of the Regional Coordination for Peace and Security; Kandy Mendoza, secretary of Sustainable Development and Climate Change; Alberto López, director of the Sports Institute; councilor Saúl Barbosa; and representatives from the Citizen Security Department.
